I Need a Break!

---
As I say 'no' for what feels like the 100th time in 5 minutes, the whining and tears start (for what also feels like the 100th time). I'm about to boil over and yell at him as he clings to my leg blubbering something about Bubble Guppies. And then I hear the baby cry because the screaming woke her up from a nap.

Okay, deep breath.

Get the baby up and focus on her for a minute while the toddler cries outside her room.

Yeah, this isn't going to work.
--

Motherhood is hard. Well, anything you care about deeply tends to be at one point or another. But it seems to be much more difficult recently.

The "terrible two's" are upon us. And (full disclosure) I'm kind of losing it. I get frustrated constantly and try not to yell, but I happens all the time. Especially when a whining child is pulling on me over and over and over and over...

Who knew lunch would be so hard?

I need a break from him daily, which makes me feel awful! Why should I want to be away from my baby? I feel like a horrible mother! I chose to stay home with my kids and can't make it through a day without wishing for time away from them? What's wrong with me?!

It can turn into a downward spiral of Mommy guilt if I let it. My husband is great at speaking truth to me. He constantly lets me know I am a good mother and I'm not doing anything wrong. He encourages me to take a break anyway I want to. I like taking baths, reading a book, watching TV, running an errand solo, or doing my devotional. These small moments help tremendously, and I know the kids are getting good time with their Daddy that they really miss during the day.

These breaks a great for the evening to wind down, but I needed a battle plan during the day. I didn't want to yell at the kids every day. I didn't want to 'just survive' every day but end up frustrated and drained.

That's why I've started praying circles around my kids. I love Mark Batterson's book The Circle Maker and Praying the Scriptures for your Children by Jodie Berndt. Morning, noon, and night I am praying for them (and myself). Wes is standing outside their rooms praying for them before he goes to work. Reed and I do prayer time every night before bed. I've handed out scripture for our families and friends to pray for them. Any way I can get scripture and prayer into our day, I do. Worship music in the afternoon? Yep. Using scripture during discipline? Absolutely. Thanking God for a parking spot at the store? Always.

As much as I'm praying for the kids, my heart needs it, too. I need God's love to give my kids, because I don't have enough. I need God's patience as we deal with arguing, whining, and complaining, because there is NO WAY I have that. God give me wisdom to know how to approach these tantrums. It helps, but I still lose my cool.

It's easy to put on a brave face and make it seem like everything is going fine when you really want to cry and scream. You're not alone! This Momma struggles with it every day. Some days aren't pretty, and quite a few are downright ugly! But you're doing a great job. You are the best Momma for your kids. God made sure of that.

I love this verse and the hope that it gives me:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.”

Lamentations 3:22-24

I'm off to love on a whiny two year old! Pray for me!

Enjoy!

Feeding the toddler

This boy is a good eater. Like, really good. He'll eat just about anything we give him, except bananas. He still dislikes them. Since he was itty bitty.

He makes it so easy for me to give him a healthy lunch. I'm not sure what makes kids good eaters. Maybe it's the variety you offer in first foods. Maybe it's the taste for flavors while they're nursing. Or maybe it's the refusal to introduce certain foods. Whatever it is, I'm thankful.

With two little ones vying for my attention, meals have become more complicated. I've gotta have a fast, easy way to get a healthy toddler meal ready. PB&J or chicken nuggets may seem easy, but I've found a healthier and easier way to do meals. It took some time, but now I know to always keep on hand certain things to make all meals go smoothly.

Breakfast:
Yogurt - Every. Day. Reed LOVES the stuff.
Fruit - I make a point to wash and cut the fruit one day and keep it in a bowl until it's gone. Makes it much easier to scoop some out for Reed. It's also an easy addition to any of our meals. Just grab the bowl out of the fridge and put it on the table. DONE!
Pancakes - made in one large batch on the weekend and frozen
Breakfast cookies - Wes has this obsession with BelVita. He eats them every day, sometimes multiple times a day. He calls them crackers, but let's face it, they're found in the cookie aisle. They're cookies. Since he eats so many (ok, I eat them too) I figured I could make some myself. So I found a recipe on Lisa Leake's site and started experimenting. Here is the original recipe.
Honestly, they were a little bland. I added two more tablespoons maple syrup and put in chocolate chips! YUM! Wes was pretty happy.

Maybe once a week I get to make eggs. Both kids like them and I do too, but mornings are particularly tricky. I have to feed Melanie her big girl food right away or she becomes a hot mess. This means I don't have time to stand by the stove.

Meal #1: Pancake from the freezer, yogurt, and fruit

Meal #2: Biscuit, Sausage, fruit, and yogurt

Meal #3: Omelet, fruit, breakfast cookie, and yogurt

Meal #4: Egg, fruit, and yogurt

Meal #5: Eggs, sausage, fruit, and yogurt

Lunch:
Avocado
Cheese
Cherry tomatoes
Fruit
Cottage cheese
Carrots
Lunch meat

Meal #1: It takes no time at all to grab a few blueberries, cheese cubes, and cherry tomatoes out of their containers. Then it just depends on how fast I can slice an avocado. I don't want to brag, but I'm pretty good at it.

Meal #2: More cheese and avocado. A few carrots out of the bag and fruit scooped from the bowl and Reed is ready to go!

Meal #3: More cheese (shocker), tomatoes, carrots, leftover broccoli from last night's dinner, and some yummy energy bites I discovered at HEB. Reed loves them because they look and taste like chocolate. This way he's not asking for a cookie.

Meal #4: This delicious meal brought to you by leftovers! Rib meat, mashed potatoes, roasted broccoli, and, of course, yogurt! He also asked for carrots. What 2 year old does that?!

Meal #5: Carrots, cottage cheese, avocado, tomatoes, and a breakfast cookie

Snack:
Fruit
Oaty balls
Cheese
Go Go Squeeze

The key is be prepared and organized. I found that I needed to grocery shop on the weekend and prepare things Sunday when Wes can help make food or watch the kids. This weekend we stocked up on pancakes and breakfast cookies.

Reed's 2nd Birthday

We woke up Sunday to celebrate Reed's birthday! First we had a small party in bed!

After church and lunch, Reed got to blow out the candle on his brownie, with Daddy's help.

Then he got to open a present!!

YAY!!

In honor of his Bubble Guppy themed party, he has a shirt to wear now. He kept telling us who was on his shirt: "Gowee (Goby), Geeew (Gil), Nonna (Nonny), Papaay (Bubble Puppy)."

It's too cute.

We saved his other presents for the party.

Reed's Party: It was, of course, Bubble Guppy themed

Splish, Splash! Reminds me of last year, but with one addition to the crew.

2013: They were so little!!!

The cookie cake had a similar theme as well.

Bubble Puppy cookie cake
Reed sure loves puppies!

Blow out the candles!!

Yummy!!

 Presents!!

Our sweet friends, and Reed's God-parents came up to celebrate.
We love the Diems!
All the boys

On Sunday we had to celebrate further with a trip to Babes.
We use any excuse to come here!

Love!

Cheesy smile!

We had a great time celebrating this sweet promise's 2nd birthday. It would have been harder to believe he was 2 if we didn't have another little one as well.

We love you, Reed, and are so thankful for you! We look forward to many more birthdays with you!

Enjoy!

Melanie - 8 months

Height: 29 inches

Weight:  22 lbs

Hair: Blonde

Eyes: Blue

Food: Still breastfed, but is destroying some food right now. Melanie loves eating, but is all about feeding herself. What 8 month old does that? She loves yogurt (just like brother) and pretty much anything we put on her tray.

I heart eggs...

...and broccoli

Yogurt face!

Sleep: We finally got Mel to sleep all night, but then I went away with her for the weekend and messed everything up. Then we went to Fort Worth for the next weekend. Maybe a long haul at home is just what she needs. She naps like a champ and is a pro at putting herself to sleep.

Showing us how it's done (napping in the car)

Temperament: I write about how happy Melanie is on every post, but it's SO TRUE! She laughs and smiles and squeals all day long unless she's hungry or tired.
